For many older adults, “senior fitness” means a chair, a few light stretches, and a class designed mostly to fill an hour. Ruben P. Thickston has built his career on the belief that they deserve far more. As an award-winning senior fitness coach, international fitness presenter, and founder of Functionally Evolve Senior Fitness, Ruben creates fun, functional, low-impact fitness experiences for older adults of every ability level, from independent living to assisted living and memory car with Everfit.
His story is a reminder that it’s never too late to move with purpose, and that the people who need it most deserve programming built with real ambition.
More than exercise
For Ruben, this work was never only about fitness. Over the years, he has watched movement change the lives of older adults in ways that reach far beyond a workout. “I’ve seen movement give people their confidence back, help them maintain their independence, and reconnect them with the life that they absolutely love,” he says.
Those moments are why he has committed his career to changing what senior fitness is and how it looks. Too often, programming for older adults is designed to keep them occupied rather than to help them grow. Ruben sees it differently.
Older adults deserve more than just workouts to keep them busy. They deserve purposeful programming that challenges their strength, balance, coordination, cognition, and confidence, while meeting them exactly where they are.
Ruben P. Thickston, Functionally Evolve
That balance of challenge and care sits at the heart of Functionally Evolve. Whether a client lives independently or in memory care, the goal is the same: build real capability in a way that feels safe, engaging, and fun.
Building a business while leading a movement
Raising the standard for an entire industry doesn’t happen overnight, and Ruben is honest that the journey hasn’t always been easy. On any given week, he might be coaching clients, presenting to fitness professionals around the world, creating content, and leading his team, all while continuing to grow the business.
What kept him going through the hardest stretches was the impact he sees every day. “Even through those difficult moments, I kept showing up because I know the impact this work can have,” he says. For Ruben, every client who stands a little steadier or moves with a little more confidence is proof that the effort is worth it.
Leading the game, with Everfit
With so much on his plate, staying organized and consistent is essential, and that’s where Everfit comes in. “Everfit has become an important part of how I deliver personal training and coaching,” Ruben says. He uses the platform to individualize programs, assign workouts, build progressions, communicate with clients, and support them between sessions.
For older adults, that continuity matters. Progress in balance, strength, and confidence comes from steady, consistent work, not a single class a week. Having everything in one place lets Ruben keep that support going beyond the time he spends with clients in person. “It helps me stay organized and more consistent, to give the best experience I can to all of my clients,” he says.

This is only the beginning
Ruben’s next chapter is about reaching more people. He is expanding Functionally Evolve through on-demand fitness, personal training, education, and workshops. He is also building partnerships with senior living communities and beyond. His goal is to keep breaking barriers and raising the standard of active aging fitness, so more older adults can move with confidence and live with greater independence.
For a coach who has spent his career proving that aging and ambition belong together, the work is far from finished.

Ruben’s story is part of our 6th Anniversary: All On Coach Spotlight Series.
In it, we sit down with coaches in the Everfit Community to talk about the moment they went all in: the decision, the risk, and what it took to follow through. Each story comes back to the same belief. Real progress isn’t powered by willpower alone.
